The NCU Chapel project continues to move forward toward the goal of constructing a much needed chapel building on the secure grounds of the ADC North Central Unit correctional facility near Calico Rock, Arkansas.
Much of our inspiration has come from the visionary and who some call God’s Raconteur, the most prolific chapel builder in modern times, Mr. Frank Graham. Since his ministry, Chapel of Hope, began in 1990, he is responsible for the funding and construction of 11 prison chapels across the state of Texas. Frank’s ministry has helped make possible untold numbers of incarcerated men’s souls being shown the true freedom of life in Christ Jesus. It is our hope and calling to model Frank’s low cost, low overhead, volunteer approach in building the chapel here at the Arkansas North Central Unit in Calico Rock.

NCU inmate work crews assist the Lions each by working to clean up and prepare the Tip Wiseman Rodeo Arena each year prior to the annual Lions rodeo held each June. The funds, raised at this year’s rodeo, serves as a big “thank you” from the Lions club for all the help received from inmates over the years.
It would be quite a stretch to architecturally describe our rectangular chapel as “designed,” What our team HAS experienced is the Spirit-led search that resulted in finding and building a contractual relationship with our architect, Jim Hewlett. Renowned in the southwest for decades, he now spends his retirement years in ministry assisting faith-based projects of all sizes and shapes get off the ground. Jim’s unique modular approach and innovative application of construction processes is helping us insure that we keep our building and material costs to a minimum. His design concepts yield a facility that is at the same time welcoming to inmates and security-friendly.
